The troubles that Hicky faced in Calcutta stemmed from one Protestant missionary from Tranquebar who set up shop in Cuddalore and then moved to Calcutta, Johann Zacharias Kiernander who was seconded to India by the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge according to Hicky was more interested in making money and he accused him of systematically defrauding the Society. He has done a commendable job in telling this historical tale centering around the freedom of press across time in a very fascinating way.Printing began in India in the tiny coastal village of Tranquebar in 1714 when Prussian missionaries from Halle established a printing press as support to carry out their evangelical activities. It is clearly evident from his findings how deeply he has studied and explored the original copies of the newspaper ‘Hicky’s Bengal Gazette’. Mr Andrew displays his findings in a very engaging manner in his presentation. He not only talks about the actuality of things but also enlightens about the significance of the contribution the development in print media brought about by Hicky has made.
